Dozens of leading international figures are today uniting around a call to "end climate crimes". End the endless, dilatory and uncertain discussions and take action. At long last.
Ahe signatories are of all origins and nationalities (see the list of the first one hundred signatories at the end of the article). They include intellectual and militant figures such as the Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Naomi Klein, Pierre Rabbhi, Patrick Chamoiseau, sociologists such as Dominique Méda, anthropologists (Philippe Descola, David Graeber and Eduardo Viveiros de Castro), philosophers such as Jean-Pierre Dupuy, economists (Gael Giraud, Susan George, Serge Latouche), climatologists, historians, stylists, designers. In short? a community of intelligences and talents that, beyond words, pious hopes and intentions, wants to take action.
The objective of this "climate insurgency" and to confront "powerful forces - fossil fuel companies, agribusiness multinationals, financial institutions, dogmatic economists, climate skeptics and climate negotiators, policy makers trapped in these lobbies - are blocking and promoting false solutions".
The signatories know that this battle will not be won by the usual methods. They have their sights set on the next UN Climate Conference (COP 21) and they are not expecting miracles. On the other hand, they invoke the determination of peoples to "stop climate crimes" as in other times and places they have done to end slavery, totalitarianism, colonialism or apartheid. "They made the choice to fight for justice and equality and knew that no one would fight in their place. Climate change is a similar issue and we are preparing for a similar insurgency. »
