A coagulation bandage that stops bleeding in seconds: this is the medical innovation of an Israeli company that allows a bandage, when put in contact with liquid, to change its state to become a healing gel, which could save lives quickly. Explanations.
The "Woundclot" bandage, developed by the Israeli company Core Scientific Creations based in Kfar Saba, has a "special molecular structure", which means that it can absorb large amounts of liquid without breaking up, according to its inventor, Dr. Shani Eliyahu Gross, Vice President of Core Scientific Creations.
"When brought into contact with liquids, it begins to absorb huge amounts of blood, and then changes state to become a gel."Dr. Gross told Reuters. And the more blood the bandage absorbs, the faster it will begin to clot. The effectiveness of the bandage, as well as the fact that it does not require pressure to be applied to the wound, means that it can have important implications in the field of combat, where uncontrollable bleeding is the leading cause of death, according to Yuval Yaskil, CEO of Core Scientific Creations.
This invention is particularly relevant in the case of head and neck injuries, where the application of pressure does not stop the bleeding.
"These products allow us to treat very severe bleeding with minimal training and with minimal interference with regular medical treatments or procedures that are used today", said Yaskil.
He adds that "Our product is unique because it is the only product on the market whose characteristics exclude the application of compression in case of severe bleeding while at the same time being bio-absorbable".
The Israeli police are already using Woundclot bandages and their use in hospitals has already begun. Count a little less than 10 dollars per bandage.
Core Scientific Creations' invention is one of the most expensive on the market for such products, but Yaskil argued that cheaper options are not cost-effective in the long run and that the product can replace procedures that cost thousands of dollars.
