Fondation Hirondelle received the PEC 2014 Prize for the Protection of Journalists, awarded by the "Presse Emblème Campagne" at the beginning of June in Geneva.
Each year, this award honours an individual or organization working in conflict zones to defend press freedom and media workers.
This year, the CEP committee has chosen to reward the support of Fondation Hirondelle for the exercise of the profession of journalist in Africa and its efforts to curb the propaganda and hate speech that fuels conflicts. It also intends to honour the memory of those who, in recent months, have lost their lives in Africa while working as journalists.
Created 10 years ago in Geneva by journalists, the ECP proposed to draw up a draft Convention specifically for the
protection of journalists around the world. It calls for the creation of enforcement mechanisms to
better enforcement of existing law. It also advocates the creation of a specialised organisation that can help journalists on the ground in dangerous areas, follow them in their work and alert public opinion if necessary. Last year, 129 journalists were killed in the line of duty.
Fondation Hirondelle is a Swiss non-governmental organization of journalists and humanitarian professionals. Since 1995, it has been creating or supporting generalist, independent and citizen news media in war zones, endemic crisis situations or post-conflict situations.
Fondation Hirondelle develops popular media and seeks a strong audience. It gives the utmost importance to the credibility of its media, through rigorous and factual journalism. It refrains from making any comments on the air. Only staff members who are nationals of the countries where the media are located express themselves on the air. Broadcasts are, as far as possible, in national languages. The Foundation's radio stations have ethical and professional charters. The editorial line favours the concrete defence of human rights on a daily basis. The Foundation's collaborators are international. French and English are the main working languages of Fondation Hirondelle.

Fondation Hirondelle strives to create or support sustainable media that can fulfill their social role beyond the care or assistance of Fondation Hirondelle and its donors. To this end, it develops the management of its media, advertising agencies and all revenue-generating activities likely to ensure the financial and institutional independence of its media in the long term.
