Ready to try everything to consume less?

Sharing, renting, bartering, recovering... over the next few years, the majority of French and European consumers intend to exploit all "alternative" modes of consumption in order to limit their spending.

consume-less"Collaborative consumption is about lending, renting, giving, and exchanging things through technology and peer communities," explains the eponymous site launched by the spearhead of the sharing economy Rachel Botsman and Roo Rogers, the authors of What's mine is yours, the rise of collaborative consumption (What's mine is yours, the rise of collaborative consumption).

The French are ready to try anything to consume more cheaply: that's what the latest Cetelem observatory, carried out in December 2012 with the research and consulting firm BIPE, shows, based on a survey conducted by TNS Sofres in November 2012.

To face the sustainable crisis BUT beware, this phenomenon is not only linked to the crisis but to a quest for meaning, a return to sharing, a desire to consume differently - It's a new economy!

I made a big study on the subject and many cases ... Here are some figures that support this approach to the rise of collaborative consumption ...

All solutions are now welcome to control its budget, while 71 % of Europeans declare not really having the means to consume... Thus, in the years to come, the French seem to want to avoid the traditional circuits and favour 'recuperation'. 59% already use them, while 67% intend to take advantage of them in the future. And 62% of them want to make more use of mutual aid, exchange of products and help, rather than pay.

"As an even more radical alternative to the market system, barter of goods appears to be more in decline in the current behaviour of European consumers (nearly a third of them have already practised it). Nevertheless, the economic and ecological opportunity, as well as the pleasure of exchanging goods, will convince more than half of them to resort to it in the future," explains the Cetelem Observatory. In France, barter is limited to 32% of "practitioners".

Another way to limit expenses is to buy in common. 25% of French people are already doing it, while 51% are thinking of implementing the idea.

Otherwise, you just have to get your hands dirty. Homemaking" is mainly about cooking, but also about gardening, DIY and the home. 64% of Europeans even plan to repair their electrical appliances themselves in the coming years.

We can already see from this study, as I mentioned above, that alternative consumption is not a mere futuristic idea, nor a temporary remedy to the crisis. The French are already practicing it by resorting to it occasionally: 63% buy these second life products, but 71% will adhere as much or more to the concept in the future.

Besides, why pay when there is a rental? Soon a third of Europeans will have to rent rather than buy. The concept is interesting for sports and leisure equipment, envisaged by 31% of consumers. The same is true for DIY and gardening equipment (33%).

Finally, we will also have to take into account distribution and collaborative production, complementary currencies (including TIME money and virtual & contributory currencies) and a whole new lifestyle based on sharing!
