Autonomous and connected vehicles: new training at ESTACA

Start
The automotive sector is undergoing a revolution and we have to adapt! Especially with the multiple implications of innovation in terms of the societal impacts inherent in any technological progress. This is no longer just a matter of concern for the technical and engineering world, but is now a social issue where training is essential.

Present at the 12th ITS Exhibition in Strasbourg, the European meeting place for all those involved in new forms of mobility from 19 to 22 June, ESTACA, the European Society for the Transfer of Technology and Innovation (ESTACA), is the European association for the promotion of new forms of mobility. (1)a school of engineering specialising in transport and new forms of mobility, has made official the creation of a new system of continuing education on the technologies and societal challenges of the autonomous and connected vehicle.

Created in partnership with the VEDECOM Institute (of which ESTACA is a founding member), and Telecom EvolutionThis new programme is fully in line with the current problems of the automotive sector. For a century, the car has evolved along the same lines, becoming ever more efficient, more reliable and more comfortable. The city has adapted, as have lifestyles, to the extent that it is said of the 20th century that it is the century of the automobile.
Technological change was driving the sector forward at the time. A few years ago, a breakthrough occurred: the world became "connected", and mobility was profoundly changed. New knowledge is emerging and we need to define its contours, practices and rules.

For Guillaume Devauchelle, President of VEDECOM,  "The mobility players, the industrial fabric, the academic fabric and the territories have all understood the need to reinvent the mobility model. The status of the "queen" car was outdated. Previously " voiture objet ", it had to fit into a wider context. And mobility, at the global level, embraced a new configuration: more speed, a much larger scale, a more participative mode of operation too, in any case much more diversified.
Mobility isn't just a car you don't drive anymore. We are going to experience a real revolution that goes far beyond the automobile. » (Source : Vedecom activity report 2014-2015).

New types of vehicles equipped with ultra-sophisticated technologies are being developed that could revolutionize the way we travel. By offering driving assistance, or even delegating driving to the machine, these vehicles would ultimately improve road safety when driving autonomously. However, the coexistence of man and machine raises many technological, legal and safety issues. This is why, by offering, via continuing education, courses that are directly linked to the future challenges of the automotive sector, the School aims to contribute to training a new generation of engineers who are directly in touch with the future challenges of the automotive sector, who master the technical aspects and measure the societal impacts inherent in any technological progress.

A training course that combines technical issues and a prospective vision of the autonomous and connected vehicle.

At a time when all the players in the automotive sector are sharing their advances in this field of the future and when some local authorities are experimenting with these vehicles of the future, this three-day training course will enable learners to understand the technical issues and socio-economic stakes involved in delegated driving vehicles. This continuing education program is intended for public authority employees and managers, executives from the automotive sector, project managers, researchers, town planners, as well as students who are following an engineering course.
Each of the three days of training will address both technical and prospective issues related to the use of autonomous vehicles in an urban environment: location, piloting, telecommunications, big data and data enhancement, cyber-security, human factors, legal aspects, etc.

The three days of training will be divided into two main parts :
DAY 1
- Part 1: Autonomous vehicle systems approach
- Part 2: Autonomous Vehicle Subsystems: Perception
DAY 2
- Part 1: Autonomous Vehicle Subsystems: Location, Planning, Telecommunications
- Part 2: Data issues: big data and cyber-security
DAY 3
- Part 1: Human socio-economic issues of the autonomous connected vehicle
- Part 2: The Autonomous Vehicle: The Revolution of New Mobility is Underway

(1)ESTACA, a specialised post-baccalaureate engineering school, is a major European player in the field of transport and mobility. Its Paris-Saclay campus is located in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, its West campus in Laval in Mayenne. Thanks to a pedagogy the heart of today's transport issues (eco-mobility, on-board systems, propulsion systems and renewable energy, etc.). on board, ...) and at its ESTACA'LAB research centre, the School graduates engineers with recognised technical know-how in the industrial and economic world. Open to the world, the School has about thirty foreign university partners and works with many organizations (NASA...). Passionate and professional, ESTACA engineers are recognized in the industrial world for their ability to adapt quickly. Highly in demand by companies, nearly 80% of the engineering students and the School sign a contract before graduation.
