More than half of all mobile applications will be hybrid by 2016, Gartner announced. Mobility has been a world apart until now for computer scientists. "But mobility is now influencing global strategies and tactics in technology and enterprise architecture," said Ken Dulaney, vice president at Gartner. "Companies understand that they need to manage multiple mobile platforms, especially with the success of BYOD. »
To meet this need, companies are looking to implement applications on multiple hardware platforms and operating systems. They are expected to be attracted to hybrid architectures that combine the portability of HTML5 applications with a native container that facilitates access to the native functions of the device.
When it comes to taking advantage of geo-location, notification systems, mapping capabilities, and even sensors such as the camera, applications must be developed using either a hybrid or native solution.
Evaluate market development platforms
He says: "Organizations need to consider how applications can be enhanced or improved by adding native terminal capabilities. Then, they need to evaluate development platforms that allow native, hybrid and Web-based applications to be developed from the same core code. And where possible, software development activities should be consolidated with mobile cross-platform development platforms. »
Two more predictions are announced by Gartner. "In 2014, Apple will be accepted by corporate IT teams as it is today for Microsoft. "This is based on the fact that while the iPhone and iPad are certainly accepted, Mac systems for desktops and laptops are not yet. That's going to change, according to Gartner's David Mitchell Smith.
"Macs are going to benefit from the consumerization of computing, and they're going to take on more and more of the features of iOS. It's consumer demand that's going to drive Apple's acceptance in the enterprise," he believes.
At the same time, Microsoft's mobile offering, with Windows Phone and Windows 8, is less attractive. However, these new products will gain a certain acceptance in companies, both because of the relationships that Microsoft has been able to build with its corporate customers and for its ease of administration.
Microsoft products less attractive than Apple products
However, unlike Apple's offer, Microsoft's products do not benefit from the consumerisation phenomenon. Basically, Microsoft's products do not trigger enough desire to own them in the man in the street.
Second prediction: in 2013, the first 50 $ smartphone will appear in emerging countries. These smartphones will not have all the advanced functions of terminals in developed countries and will benefit from the progress made in the integration of components. For mobile phone manufacturers, this will be the time to ask whether they should abandon this market to focus on high-end systems.
