Eole, God of the wind and Ra, God of the sun give birth to Eraole®, which will write a new page in the history of aviation.
As part of the Paris Air Show 2013, Raphaël Dinelli announced on June 18, in front of aeronautics professionals and the media, the launch of the first TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT WITHOUT STOPPING AND WITHOUT CARBON PRESSURE aboard Eraole®, a hybrid "solar / bioenergy" electric plane!
In spring 2015, this aircraft of the future will take off from Saint Pierre et Miquelon, French territory and emblematic place of the first challenges in the history of aviation for :
- a silent and CO2 emission-free crossing over the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean: 4,000 km and 40 hours of non-stop flying, with a media-covered arrival for the official closing of the Paris Air Show on June 21, 2015.
- a historic record that marks an unprecedented technological breakthrough, optimizing solar energy and long-distance hybrid propulsion in the aviation of the future
- the fruit of the cross-cutting applied research programmes (solar, wind, bioenergy, composites, etc.) of the Vital Ocean Foundation led by Raphaël Dinelli, to serve the major energy and environmental challenges of tomorrow.
With Eraole®, the Foundation is betting on the solar/hydrogen hybrid electric aircraft: 43 m2 of photovoltaic cells combined with lithium batteries and a fuel cell. An energy challenge and a technological breakthrough commensurate with the ambition of this daring prototype.
The 1000 Pioneers Award: a new web contest until November 18, 2013
Already, the French are invited to become pioneers of a new world. They can participate in a unique prize, the "1000 Pioneers Award". Individuals, companies or associations whose initiatives can change the world were invited to make themselves known and to become pioneers of a new world by presenting their projects in the six themes of the 1000 Pioneers Award. A big vote is organized on the web to honour the most surprising innovations. Internet users will be able to vote and have their favourite initiative elected.
The purpose of this award is to honour the multitude of initiatives contributing to the transformation of society. The Jury will reveal the three Laureates who will see their initiatives supported throughout 2014. These winners will in turn become pioneers who are changing the world and will win a promotional campaign worth €30,000.

It is within this framework that the interview below was conducted to present the Eraole project.
How does your initiative contribute to the transformation of society?
The applied research programme "Eraole®, the aircraft of the future" of the Fondation Océan Vital focuses on technological innovations optimising the use of renewable energies (solar, bioenergy, composites, etc.) and helping to reduce the ecological footprint in civil aviation. It proves that respect for the environment and energy requirements are compatible and transferable in aeronautics, and encourages the emergence of new industrialization and employment sectors.
How is your initiative innovative?
Eraole® concentrate of technological innovations: High-modulus composite structure>Reduced mass; Wing interlining>Extremely high efficiency photovoltaic encapsulated in composites; Electric drive>Fossil fuel-free propulsion; Hybrid solar/bioenergy>Carbon neutral balance; Regulation>High efficiency; Avionic system>Ultra low consumption; Offset biplane design>Optimum aerodynamics; Electromagnetic field protection>Avionic power train-carbon structure.
What is the status of your initiative and what are the first results?
Labelled by the EMC2 (composites) and Tennerdis (solar) clusters - Aerodynamic and three-dimensional studies (ONERA, ANDHEO) and validated structural calculations - Partners (EDF, Renault), institutions (Aéro-Club de France, Pays de la Loire Region), Research (INES, ICAM), aeronautics (ELECTRAVIA), technical (KOKAM, Safran-Structil, Allio Group, Tronico) -Research for sponsors is underway for the manufacture and certification of Eraole (2014) and its first transatlantic flight attempt (2015).
What impact can your initiative have in the next five years? How can your model be replicated?
In the "1st transatlantic flight" version, Eraole® will be a solar/bioenergy hybrid electric single-seater (wingspan 14 m, length 7.5 m, weight 750 kg). It could be industrialized in an electric two-seater version (weight 472 kg) and offered on the pilot training club market. The Océan Vital Foundation puts solar energy at the heart of the development of tomorrow's transport and has contributed to the production of vehicles of the future by Peugeot, Renault, Volvo, SNCF, Fast Concept Car, and others.
