KEY FACTS OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT
- Wind River Linux's new security addon addresses the growing number of security vulnerabilities caused by the emergence of connected, intelligent devices.
- The Carrier Grade platform update for Wind River Linux provides support for the latest Linux kernel 3.10 LTSI.
- Both software products are compatible with the Yocto project, which in turn improves compatibility between different platforms and the interoperability of components.

Wind River®, the global leader in software for intelligent connected systems, today announced a security profile for Wind River Linux, a software certifiable to the Common Criteria General Purpose Operating System (GPOS) Protection Profile up to EAL 4 assurance level.

With greater connectivity between different devices, adopting a well-established development approach based on standards such as the Common Criteria can help address security concerns around the Internet of Things (IoT). In addition, Wind River is also releasing the latest version of Carrier Grade Profile for Wind River Linux, a turnkey platform that enables customers to benefit from a carrier-grade Linux distribution (Carrier Grade Linux CGL).

This security profile is a high-value software module for Wind River Linux. It provides new security features that enable developers to address future threats related to the rise of IoT. Its key features - a strengthened kernel, secure booting, a security-focused user space, and the Wind River Linux base compatible with the Yocto Project - integrate seamlessly with validation tools, documentation and hardware support specifications.

"With the Internet of Things, the connectivity and security needs of devices are becoming more complex, yet companies are still forced to meet tight development schedules and budgets," he said. comments Dinyar Dastoor, Vice President of Product Management at Wind River. "Our new security profile for Wind River Linux provides a secure and reliable computing platform that complies with industry standards. It enables customers to shorten development cycles and get products to market faster by providing the security, performance and user experience needed for today's increasingly intelligent and connected devices across all industries. »

"With the effervescence resulting from trends such as the Internet of Things, developers are faced with new issues of complexity to manage projects requiring more security, information, and performance. says Mike Woster, Chief Operating Officer for the Linux Foundation. "Wind River has long been a leader in open source, and continues to lead the way in enabling developers to take advantage of the latest innovations in Linux and overcome new obstacles they face. »

With this security profile, customers can take advantage of the best security practices applied in many industries and integrated with the Common Criteria protection profile. In addition, if evaluation is required, it reduces the cost and time required to develop, certify and maintain a complete Linux distribution using the Common Criteria evaluation system.

The security profile also provides a certification kit in order to be able to certify compliance with the functional requirements with the required level of assurance. By demonstrating that their products run on a Wind River certification platform, developers can move much faster through the usually complex and costly certification process. With Wind River's help, customers can get their products to market much faster and meet the security requirements of a variety of sectors, such as aerospace, defense, automotive, industrial or networking.

Wind River's sales support includes EAL4+ defect management and extends to the entire Wind River Linux product line, including the security profile. Customers benefit from highly responsive problem resolution, which is critical since security issues are often present long before they are publicly announced.

On the other hand, the new version of the Carrier Grade profile provides support for the latest Linux 3.10 LTSI kernel and extended support for a variety of hardware architectures. The profile also includes Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) virtualization with containers to transparently provide carrier-grade functionality within a virtualized environment. As data traffic pushes the boundaries of carrier networks, and as the industry moves towards network function virtualization (NFV) capabilities, it is critical to maintain carrier-grade reliability and comply with the stringent performance and security requirements defined by the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that carriers guarantee to their customers today.

Wind River Linux provides a commercial-grade Linux platform and an easy user experience with a rich set of features based on the latest open source technologies, fully integrated development tools, a worldwide support team and expert services. Built on the Yocto Project development infrastructure, Wind River Linux improves cross-platform compatibility and component interoperability.
