Printed meat... Yum!?

Peter Thiel believes in the idea of printing his steak, and he hasn former Facebook historical administratorwhich the foundation recently awarded $350,000 to Modern Meadowa start-up company that plans to use 3D printing technology to try the experiment.

While some studies point to the impossibility for the world's population to continue the current meat diet by 2050, Modern Meadows intends to use this technology to produce artificial meat. "When you look at all the resources required for a hamburger, you realize how much of an environmental disaster this creates," said Andras Forgacs, the company's co-founder with Gabor Forgacs, his father.

The technology used for this is inspired by that developed in the field of regenerative medicine: one cartridge contains tissue cells, the other contains a hydrogel that allows the whole to be aggregated, and the launch of the print gives birth to the desired tissue. This is a laboratory technology that both entrepreneurs are familiar with from their involvement in and promotion of the commercialization of biological printing through their previous company, OrganovoThe company is specialized in the use of 3D printing for medical purposes (drug testing or tissue transplants).

Lindy Fishburne, head of the Breakout Labs behind the Modern Meadows scholarship, believes that this is "a project with the potential to create a cost-effective and compassionate solution to a global problem"... not to mention the animal suffering highlighted by the Forgacs, who also plan to make artificial leather in this way.

For the moment, the initiative is still in its infancy: there is no mention of their progress on the USDA and their first objective is to create a piece of synthetic meat suitable for consumption about one inch long (2 x 1 x 0.5 centimetres).

While waiting to taste "printed meat on...", it might be best to read the excellent Do you have to eat animals, from Jonathan Safran Foer and learn how to eat vegetarian without becoming a goat! Or to follow Pierre Rabhi's advice: no longer wish each other "bon appétit", but "good luck"...
