Taxirail, the future train of our campaigns

The submission of the Spinetta report to the Government on the future of the SNCF has set fire to the powder keg. Among the many shocking proposals contained in this document, there is one that crystallises the tensions: the closure of certain small rural railway lines, deemed not profitable enough and even loss-making. Yet the train is still indispensable in our countryside. It is a powerful vector of mobility, social links and even economic attractiveness. Abolishing the small lines would mean isolating a whole section of the population. In this context, a French startup has taken up the challenge: to use the best technology to invent THE train of the future, to make these lines both profitable and attractive.
 
Come small rural railway lines, which are considered to be insufficiently profitable and even loss-making, account for 16% of the resources invested in railways, even though they concern less than 10% of trains and 2% of passengers.
1.8 billion is thus spent each year to transport on average less than 30 passengers per train. On the least used lines (fine service lines in UIC categories 7 to 9), there are only 25% trains with more than 50 passengers.
However, beyond the reality of the figures, the train remains indispensable in our countryside. It is a powerful vector of mobility, social ties and even economic attractiveness. Eliminating short lines would mean isolating a whole section of the population. In addition, the train is more than ever a means of locomotion for the future: like urban areas, rural areas aspire to develop public transport to limit the use of cars in order to preserve the environment.
 
In this context, a Breton startup has taken up the challenge: to use the best of technology to invent THE train of the future, to make these lines both profitable and attractive.
Already known for its mobility projects (Lovelo...) or for the patrol boat Code Libellulethe startup EXID Concept & Développement has imagined TAXIRAIL, a new concept of intelligent rail transport, composed of autonomous modules.
In collaboration with public authorities and operators in France, Europe and the USA, the startup plans to put the first TAXIRAIL into service in 2023, when the TER lines are opened to competition.
 

Taxirail: a concentrate of technology to revolutionise secondary rail networks

Rail transport is an incredible opportunity within the framework of a sustainable mobility policy. It consumes little space, little energy and it pollutes little. So to avoid that it only benefits urban and suburban transport, EXID Concept & Développement has invented the TAXIRAIL.
Régis Coat, the founder of the company, explains: "We wanted to change the paradigm by taking into account a triple need: the need for an attractive service for passengers, the need for profitability for the operator, and the primordial protection of the environment. To make a success of this breakthrough project, we have surrounded ourselves with experts from the railway sector, but also with experts from the automotive and aeronautical industries. »
 
Forget about the 80-seater TER that weighs 50 tons - or more! Taxirail is an autonomous module - therefore without a driver - with a maximum capacity of 40 seats.
Ultra-light (barely 8 tons), it places much less stress on the rails and ballast, which considerably reduces maintenance costs. In terms of energy consumption, the operator is also a winner: Taxirail is either purely electric or hybrid, and runs on batteries, so it does not require an electrified line.
 
Another advantage for users: with the Taxirail, users no longer need to adapt to the schedule, it's the schedule that adapts to them!
The modules are indeed 100% autonomous. And that changes everything! No more timetables that don't suit anyone, no more trains when you need them (in the evening, during the day, at weekends, ...), no more stops at stations where nobody gets off or gets on (which wastes a lot of time), no more empty trains ...
Taxirail's artificial intelligence will be in charge of defining the most relevant timetables according to the needs of passengers. Thus, at off-peak times, the system is able to operate on demand, according to needs and optimising each transport.
 

A fast, secure and environmentally friendly transport solution

The Taxirail is not only innovative, it also integrates all the environmental issues, in particular thanks to an electric or hybrid engine (hydrogen, bio-fuel or bio-gas) and solar panels: energy savings are substantial since it is the solar panels that power the comfort functions (lighting, heating/cooling) and entertainment (multimedia, Wi-Fi).
In addition, comfort, safety and performance are guaranteed even on difficult tracks thanks to its axles and active suspension.
In order to ensure total operational safety and to provide real-time traffic information to passengers, Taxirail is also permanently connected to the supervisors (PCC).
In short, Taxirail is...
1. A versatile, attractive and cost-effective solution
2. A carbon neutral balance sheet,
3. An infrastructure that is inexpensive to maintain (track equipment and rails),
4. Very low axle weight,
5. A particularly low cost per kilometre and passenger transported,
6. An ability to operate on demand,
7. A capacity to "chain" several modules, in order to adjust the transport offer to the number of passengers.
 

EXID Concept & Development: responding effectively to the challenges of the 21st century

Created in 2014, the innovation office EXID Concept & Développement is designed around a disruptive business model that operates at three levels:
