A Master's Degree in Exploitation and Environment at the Ecole des mines d'Alès

Start

Pedagogical innovation at the Alès School of Mines: the creation of a Master's Degree in Mining Exploitation and Environment in August 2014. To learn how to take into account the environmental issues of the extractive industry.

The timing of this training is timely given the latest decisions taken by the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Board in early July and the five priorities defined by the Strategic Committee for the Extractive Industriespresented at the end of June to Arnaud Montebourg.

The growing needs of emerging countries for raw materials and the security of supply of strategic metals to developed countries are contributing to the revival of the extractive industry's activity. However, a resumption of mining activities cannot be envisaged without taking into account the treatment of the environmental impacts of the operations, which guarantees its societal acceptance. The training of mining executives in countries producing and exporting raw materials has therefore become strategic.

On August 25, 2014, the Alès School of Mines will open a new Specialized Master accredited by the Conférence des Grandes Ecoles: Exploitation et Environnement Miniers (2EM).

The 1-year MS 2EM is aimed at graduates with 5 years of higher education and executives with 4 years of professional experience. The course will train executives capable of integrating the environmental issues related to the activities of the extractive industry, by providing them with a knowledge base in geosciences for engineers, mining methods and techniques, mineral resource development and environmental protection.

Let us recall that the Mining School of Alès, with its history and experience, created in 1991 the Centre d'Etudes Supérieures pour la Sécurité et l'Environnement Miniers (CESSEM), in order to train recognized experts in this field. The MS 2EM is indeed an evolution of the CESSEM training.

Professionalizing curriculum

The face-to-face teaching (7 months) will be largely based on tutorials, role-playing exercises and technical visits in France and abroad. Professionals from the mining environment and extractive industry sector will teach half of these courses.

At the end of the course, the participants will complete an internship of at least four months. This internship will give rise to a professional thesis on a technical subject proposed by the host company.

Graduates will work in the extractive industry (extraction, processing and valorisation of mineral resources, industrial minerals and quarry materials) and in consultancies specialising in environmental studies in the field of mines and quarries. They will most often work as operating unit managers (REX) and as managers/consultants in consultancies specialising in environmental engineering in the field of mines and quarries.

Professional Partnerships

For the creation of the MS 2EM, the Alès School of Mines has the support of many national and international companies in the extractive industry sector, as well as the Ministries in charge of Mines of the main mineral resource producing and exporting countries, interested in training their executives or recruiting students from this training.
