Conceived by the firm MetaThe SpaceGlasses offer their holders the possibility to literally manipulate virtual objects. Competitors to Google Glass? Certainly because they will not be released before 2014 and these new "glasses" offer interesting features.
Despite a design less discreet than Google's, the SpaceGlasses have a network of sensors and two infrared cameras that function as Kinect modules. This makes it possible to recognize movements, the environment but also the depth of field. Equipped with two transparent screens, the high-tech accessory is based on motion tracking software. As a result, its wearer is able to manipulate holograms with simple gestures, view data directly under his nose or interact with a 3D element.
Meta develops these augmented reality goggles by combining the power of a laptop and a smartphone to manipulate virtual objects in the physical world through hand control, just like in the movies "Iron Man" or "Avatar".
Meta, a company straight out of Columbia University, is trying to pave the way for a new era in computing. Apple inspired the modern personal computer revolution with the Macintosh and the mobile revolution with the iPod, iPhone and iPad. Meta wants to lead the transition from mobile to augmented reality.
A little more patience: the SpaceGlasses are still in their beta version. Interested developers can already purchase them for $667 (about 500 euros). However, the final version should not be long in coming.
