In the nets

Dans les filets, by Bernard Seret and Pascal Bach - Watercolors by Jean-François DEJOUANNET - Preface by Guillaume LECOINTRE - Editions MkFin co-publication with IRD editions / in partnership with Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, April 7, 2023 - 248 pages - 109 naturalist drawings

According to estimates, 10 to 40% of the world's catch is caught accidentally. The term "by-catch" refers to any catch made during fishing that does not correspond to the species and size of fish sought. While some of these species are kept on board to be marketed, the majority are discarded - dead or alive - because they are protected by international legislation or have no commercial interest. A real global waste!

Apart from protected marine areas, there is virtually no aquatic space on our planet that is not subject to some form of fishing activity, whether recreational or professional, artisanal or industrial.

When it comes to fishing, we know about commercial catches. Less well known are the discards, too often dead, from accidental catches that don't end up on our plates. This real waste is an invisible facet of fishing. The naturalist drawings presented here bear witness to these fish and marine mammals caught by mistake.

Each watercolor shows the beauty of living things, and is accompanied by precise information to help you discover these species. By helping to make the non-visible visible, this book will be of equal interest to sea or fishing enthusiasts, natural history buffs or citizens simply wishing to nourish their acts of consumption with an environmental ethic.
