You can't dissolve an uprising

You can't dissolve an uprising. 40 voix pour les Soulèvements de la Terre - Collectif - Editions du Seuil, June 9, 2023 - 192 pages

You can't dissolve global disruption. Scientific findings and the rejection of radicalized capitalism heading for the wall cannot be erased by decree. Far from the "ecoterrorism" trials, what is at stake around movements like Earth Uprisings is nothing less than the battle of this century.

A few weeks after the mobilization against the megabassines in Sainte-Soline, at a time of social, political and ecological crisis, and in a context of very likely dissolution of the movement, there is an urgent need to quickly contribute to the public debate a book that stands out from the media polemics, written by a plurality of authors highlighting the relevance of the issues - crucial for the future of us all - that mobilize Les soulèvements de la Terre.

A book to help everyone understand the force and analyses of this new movement. At the same time, it maps out a number of perspectives, concepts and issues that are now essential to understanding our situation on earth.

Radicality: the only mode of political action equal to the challenges?
According to Léna Lazare, "Radicality can be used in an extremely pejorative way, but it goes back to the roots of the problem. Ecology is on everyone's lips, and we no longer know exactly what people are talking about when they talk about ecology. When I started claiming to be a radical ecologist," she explains, "it was precisely to say that I wasn't on the side of liberal ecology. Earth Uprisings has been accused of eco-terrorism. But this ecology is based precisely on scientific work, whether in the human and social sciences, or in the hard sciences, and it's up to the challenge. If we don't follow this vision of ecology, we'll continue to head straight for the wall.

Institutional inertia put to the test of the climate emergency
Léna Lazare " "believes that "it is not the institutional political route that will enable us to win. Great victories are achieved on the ground through social movements".

Lucile Schmid adds that "the question of urgency obviously modifies the relationship to action. It also modifies the relationship to institutions and the responsibility of institutions." The essayist considers that "the paradigmatic question is why are institutions inert? Every day, we make announcements and laws. But neither laws nor announcements change the economic and social system. We need to change the economy, bring about social justice, and create the conditions for respect for nature to be enshrined in law..”

Jean-Baptiste Fressoz reminds us that "the state has long been a developmentalist state, especially in the agricultural sector. At some point, it's only natural that the State should be designated as the enemy in these kinds of struggles. A huge change of direction is needed.”
