Paris is reborn through the ages thanks to augmented reality

With this futuristic project, Paris will not be bottled but its entire history will come to life from prehistory to the present day thanks to documentaries combining archaeology, history, fiction and augmented reality, a book with virtual "pop-ups" and a website.

The original series on the history of Paris, co-produced by Planet+., Gideon programs and Dassault SystèmesA new series of five films, a 90-minute docu-drama and four 52-minute educational documentaries on the building of the Capital, will be produced.

This package is to be disseminated in October on Planète+ and will use augmented reality techniques with the help of Dassault Systèmes, a specialist in 3D design software.

Augmented reality, "is a mixture of images from the real world in real time and images from the virtual world in real time. Added to this are 3D and interactivity, since the user can move around in this universe, choose his or her viewing angles, get closer or further away," explains Mehdi Tayoubi, Director of Interactive Strategy at Dassault Systèmes on the group's campus in Vélizy-Villacoublay (Yvelines), to AFP. More than twenty people worked for two years on this project.

Another first, end SeptemberIn addition, the square in front of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris will be home to nine giant screens that will allow visitors to go back and forth between the real and virtual worlds.

Going back in time

In Planète+'s docu-drama, viewers will follow a family in a hot-air balloon flying over Paris. Through the explanations of their guide armed with a time tablet, the camera plunges into the different districts and eras: there, the Gallo-Roman Lutetia, here Notre-Dame under construction in the Middle Ages, elsewhere the Bastille still standing, the Louvre construction site...

"The spectator will have an aerial view of the city at different times, walk along the streets or through the buildings," continues Mehdi Tayoubi in the Dassault Systèmes Virtual Reality Centre where, 3D glasses on his nose, he can touch the Paris of the past during a demonstration.

A site will also allow you to walk through the history of Paris on your computer or on a 3D television set.

This reconstitution of the capital, scientifically validated by the archaeologist of the City of Paris Didier Busson, is also the subject of a book, "Paris la ville à remonter le temps" (Flammarion), in bookstores on 26 September.

This first beautiful book to exploit the technique of augmented reality presents ten virtual 3D animations that extend the experience on the internet when you place the page in front of a webcam.

Dassault Systèmes had already concocted with the author François Schuiten an augmented reality animation of the train "12 004" at the heart of the album "La Douce", published in April by Casterman. A first in comics.

The group has a technical sponsorship unit, "Passion for Innovation", which reflects on new uses of technologies generally applied to industry (aeronautics, automotive, architecture, etc.). These enthusiasts have thus reconstructed the transport of an iceberg from Greenland to the Canary Islands or, in partnership with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, thehe famous Giza Plateau in Egypt. An animation that the Department of Egyptology at Harvard University has created.
