New innovations at IBM to take advantage of Big Data

IBM announces new technologies designed to help businesses and governments address the challenges of Big Data by making the collection and analysis of large volumes of data simpler, faster and more cost-effective.

The Big Data exhibition was held at the CNIT Paris on April 3rd and 4th. It was an opportunity to see the interest of French IT managers in this revolution, which is not yet very mature, even if it is still in its infancy. a recent article in the Havard Business Review describes the Data Scientist as "the sexiest job in the 21st century"!

As we are reminded... the article in La Tribune of this day, « cach minute, 204 million e-mails are exchanged, 47,000 mobile applications are downloaded, 3,000 photos are uploaded - and 20 people are victims of identity theft. In total, more than half a terabyte (one thousand billion characters) of data is exchanged. And these numbers will continue to increase as the use of the Internet continues to evolve, especially among its "users" - there will soon be more objects than people connected to the Internet. »

In an effort to accelerate the analysis of structured and unstructured data from a variety of sources - the raison d'être of Big Data applications - IBM is unveiling a set of technologies called BLU Acceleration. Described as "the work of hundreds of IBM developers and researchers in labs around the world," BLU is expected to accelerate analysis while making applications easier to administer.

As a reminder, IBM has raised its 2015 Big Data sales forecast to $20 billion from a previous forecast of $16 billion. Big Data is now one of the company's four priorities.

Organizations increasingly face waves of structured and unstructured data created by computers, mobile devices, sensors and social networks. They are under unprecedented pressure to analyze more data faster and at lower cost to strengthen customer relationships, prevent threats and fraud, and identify new revenue opportunities.

To help organizations meet these challenges, IBM introduces two major innovations:

- Reduce volume to improve analysis, BLU Acceleration.
BLU Acceleration integrated in DB2 allows to use the data only if it is useful, if it is not duplicated, in parallel and without decompressing it. Use it right away for what it is right now. This innovation - designed by IBM Research - including in particular data skipping, enables more efficient and above all faster decision making. BLU Acceleration is a system that takes advantage of "in-memory" technologies.

- Organize and analyze all data formats, Appliance PureData System for Hadoop.
Hadoop is revolutionary open source software used to organize and analyze huge volumes of structured and unstructured data. The IBM PureData System for Hadoop reduces the time to implement Hadoop technologies for businesses from weeks to minutes.

The IBM PureSystems family, which includes IBM PureApplication System, IBM PureFlex System and IBM PureData System, enables organizations to quickly adopt Big Data, Cloud and mobile solutions.

In addition to these major innovations unveiled today, IBM is also announcing new versions of its Big Data :

- A new version of InfoSphere BigInsights, the Hadoop operational offering that makes it easier to develop applications using pre-existing SQL skills.

- A new version of InfoSphere Streams, a unique software that analyzes massive volumes of data continuously and in real time. Performance improvements and simplified application development and deployment are the hallmarks of this new version.

- A new version of Informix Time Series that integrates operational reporting capabilities and accelerated data analysis from sensors and smart meters.
