École Polytechnique launches "Global balances, sovereignty and defense issues" course

On April 8, the École Polytechnique will launch a new course entitled "Global Balances, Sovereignty and Defense Issues", aimed at first-year engineering students. Led by X professors Marine Guillaume and Amélie Férey, this new lecture course is entirely dedicated to contemporary defense issues, and will be taught by 8 experts.

In an ever-changing world, the new "Global Equilibria, Sovereignty and Defense Issues" course offered by École polytechnique will enable students to acquire and master fundamental concepts in international relations and war studies.

Designed around 8 thematic sessions, this lecture course will offer analyses, a conceptual approach and a field perspective on current upheavals in terms of sovereignty and the balance of power. Led by leading experts at the heart of these issues, these 1.5-hour classes will range from an introduction to fundamental concepts, to the roles of international organizations today, to the impact of new technologies on sovereignty. These multidisciplinary sessions will draw on a number of social science disciplines, including comparative politics, international relations, political sociology and economics.

The experts who have agreed to take part in this first session are :

  • Guillaume Lasconjarias, Director of Studies and Research at the Institut des hautes études de défense nationale (IHEDN) for the course "Introduction aux équilibres mondiaux et aux défis de défense contemporains - les fondements théoriques" ;
  • Bénédicte ChéronLecturer at the Institut Catholique de Paris, for the "Politique de défense et sociétés" course;
  • Louis Gautier, Procureur général près la Cour des comptes and specialist in international, strategic and defence issues for the course "Enjeux stratégiques actuels et le retour de la guerre" ;
  • Alexandre Escorcia, Head of Department at the French Ministry of Defence's Directorate General for International Relations and Strategy (DGRIS), for the session on the role played by international organizations today;
  • Alexandre Lahousse, Director of Defense Industry at the Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA), for the "Defense industrial policies and sovereignty" course;
  • Major General COMCYBER Aymeric Bonnemaison for the "Cybersecurity: the new conflictuality" course;
  • François Plais, Director of Operations at the Centre Interdisciplinaire des Etudes pour la Défense et la Sécurité (CIEDS) and Patrick AufortDirector of the Innovation and Defense Agency, for the "New technologies, innovation logics and sovereignty" course;
  • Mélanie RosseletStrategic Affairs and Continental Europe Advisor to the Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, for the course "France's nuclear deterrence policy".
